How We Troubleshoot

  1. Listen and lookWhat happens, when, and what changed recently.
  2. TestVoltage, continuity and load testing at the panel and the affected devices.
  3. TraceFollow the circuit to the fault, not just the symptom.
  4. Explain and quoteWhat we found, why it happened, and a firm price for the repair.

Electrical Safety Inspections

For older homes, before buying or selling, after a remodel or for an insurer, we inspect the panel, service, grounding and bonding, a sample of outlets and switches, GFCI/AFCI protection, smoke and CO alarms, and visible wiring in the attic and crawlspace. You get a clear list of hazards in priority order.

Note: this is an electrical inspection by a licensed electrician, not a general home inspection.

Local Notes

Many of the problems we trace in Altadena come from age: original wiring in pre-1950 homes, small panels carrying modern loads, and decades of additions. See electrical safety issues in older homes.

For Altadena addresses, permits come from LA County Public Works Building & Safety (Altadena is unincorporated, so not the City of Pasadena or LADBS). Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino and La Cañada Flintridge each have their own building departments. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.

Pricing: A standard service call fee applies. We quote it on the phone before we dispatch and credit it against the work if you go ahead. You get a firm written price once we have assessed the job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is troubleshooting priced by the hour?

A standard service call fee applies and is credited against the repair. Once we’ve found the fault, we give you a firm price before fixing it.

Should I worry about lights that flicker throughout the house?

Yes. Whole-house flickering can point to a loose service neutral or utility-side problem and should be checked promptly.

Do you do pre-purchase electrical inspections?

Yes. We inspect the electrical system specifically and give you a written list of issues to use in negotiations or planning.

Can you find intermittent problems?

Often. Intermittent faults are usually loose connections or heat-related failures; we test under load to reproduce them.
